Letter #12

Dear _____,

Writing these letters takes a lot of time. I think a lot about how they come out, how the words are put together, whether they make any sense – but the biggest aspect that I spend the most time on is who it is I’m writing to. I suppose what I’m trying to express is that I think a lot about you and who you are, the person who this letter reaches. Who you’ve been, who you’ll be, the person you are at every stage of life. Where does this letter find you? What have you gone through, or what is it you’re currently going through? What do you want most in the world? What are the things you strive for, or what are the things you want to get away from? Also, how are you? How do you feel about everything that has happened so far in your life? How do you feel about what may happen with each new passing day?

As these questions fly through my head, I realize how incredible you are, whoever you may be. It’s amazing, really – you. Whatever the answer to these questions, they all make up a life that is yours. You are the sum of every breath you’ve ever taken, of every step you’ve ever walked, of every word that’s ever left your lips. Thinking of it that way, it’s not an exaggeration to say that you are a collection of magnitudes, and that’s not something to take for granted or shrug off. I mean, to simply share this same space with you – for you and me to exist at this moment, in this life… how slim are those odds? Yet, here we are. Each with our own stories and experiences.

I guess what I’m getting at is that you are a walking miracle, a being worth all of the love and joy and hope that comes with existing. Sure, this means you’re open to all the pain and sadness that comes with living too, and you’ll experience these moments just as everyone else does. But that’s something astounding as well. Because no matter what you go through – good or bad – it builds you further into yourself. This amazing, messy compilation of dreams and failures and love and loss – it all adds to the person you are and I think that’s wonderful. In the grand scope of our lives, it means you are uniquely you, beautiful in your own way.

Your life – just like every life that has ever existed – is a story in the making. We’re all going through the same creative process, figuring out who we’ll sculpt ourselves into. It’s not always perfect – there will be jagged edges – but it isn’t about being perfect. It’s about… well, simply living, I think. And I find that endlessly fascinating. Who knows where we all will end up, but it’s worth following along. I want to hear all the details, to know what makes you you. Because there’s always something to learn from one another, either in our similarities or in our differences. Because I’m sure you have some amazing stories to tell, if you’re willing to share.

Because the story of you is worth listening to. I hope you know that.
